Jaebong Rho is a composer who approaches music as a medium to convey messages and provoke thought. Inspired by contemporary social issues, he weaves these themes into musical structures that engage audiences and encourage reflection.
morii (2022) evokes a collective longing for a sense of return, a sentiment increasingly observed across global societies. “i want to go home.” (2023/24), which recently premiered and deeply connected with audiences, explores dementia and raises thought-provoking questions about aging societies. His recent piece, diorama (2024/25), engages with the interplay between truth and falsehood in the post-truth era. Focusing on how something that appears undeniably false to one person can be perceived as absolute truth—or even an ideology—by another, it examines the resulting conflicts and social divisions.
He received two artist grants from the Busan Cultural Foundation, which supported his portrait recitals in 2021 and 2023. He later won the commission competition of the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, resulting in the premiere of his orchestral work morii (2022). He participated in the Composers’ Atelier Program of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra and was subsequently appointed Composer-in-Residence with the orchestra for the 2024/25 season.
In recent years, he was selected for the Lucerne Festival Academy, where a new work of his will be premiered by IEMA-Ensemble as part of the Lucerne Summer Festival. He also received First Prize in the Ensemble Écoute Composition Competition, which led to a new commission to be premiered later in the year, and was honored with an ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award.
As a film music director and composer, he collaborated with the Busan Cinema Center and the Korean Academy of Film Arts, participating in the music production for approximately 20 short and feature films. These films were screened at major festivals, including the Busan International Film Festival, Barcelona Asian Summer Film Festival, and Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
He received a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Pusan National University, where he studied with Sooran Jeong. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Composition at the Yale School of Music, studying with Aaron Jay Kernis and Christopher Theofanidis.

음악을 통해 메시지를 전달하고 사유를 이끌어내는 작곡가다. 주로 동시대 사회 현상에서 영감을 받는 그는 이러한 주제를 음악적 구조에 녹여내어 청중과 소통하며 깊은 성찰을 불러일으킨다.
모리 (2022)는 회귀에 대한 집단적 갈망이 전 세계적으로 확산하는 모습을 담아냈으며, 최근 초연된 “집에 가고 싶어.” (2023/24)는 치매를 다루어 고령화 사회 속에서 제기되는 여러 질문들을 환기시킨다. 이어서 디오라마 (2024/25)는 탈진실 시대에 진실과 거짓의 상호작용을 탐구한다. 누군가에게는 명백한 거짓이 다른 이에게는 절대적 진실이거나 심지어 이념으로 여겨질 수 있음을 짚어내며, 이로 인해 생겨나는 갈등과 사회적 분열을 살핀다.
그는 2021년과 2023년, 부산문화재단의 우수예술지원사업에 선정되어 두 차례 개인 발표회를 개최했고, 부산시립교향악단의 위촉 공모를 통해 관현악곡 모리 (2022)를 무대에 올렸다. 이후 국립심포니오케스트라의 작곡가 아틀리에 프로그램에 참여했으며, 2024/25 시즌의 상주작곡가로 위촉되었다.
최근에는 루체른 페스티벌 아카데미에 선발되어, 신작이 루체른 여름 페스티벌에서 국제 앙상블 모던 아카데미에 의해 초연된다. 이어 앙상블 에꾸뜨 작곡 콩쿠르에서 1등을 수상하며 새로운 위촉작의 발표도 예정되어 있으며, 같은 해 미국 작곡가, 작가 및 출판사 협회 재단의 모튼 굴드 젊은 작곡가상을 수상했다.
영화음악 감독으로서도 영화의전당, 한국영화아카데미 등과 함께 스무여 편의 단·장편영화에 참여했으며, 이 작품들은 부산국제영화제, 바르셀로나 아시안 서머 필름 페스티벌, 부천국제판타스틱영화제 등 주요 영화제에서 상영되었다.
그는 부산대학교에서 정수란을 사사하여 작곡 음악학사 학위를 받았고, 현재 예일대학교에서 애런 제이 커니스와 크리스토퍼 테오파니디스를 사사하며 작곡 석사 과정을 밟고 있다.
