Deriving its title from the Latin word for wheel, rotation, or cycle, "rota" is a work devoid of all external narrative or meaning, exploring instead a rigorously controlled structural mechanism and pure sonic energy.
At the foundation of the piece lies a single cycle of seven pitches. This fixed sequence repeats continuously from the very first note to the last, forming the skeletal framework of the entire work. The cycle begins on a different pitch in each instrument, forming a chord, while the seven notes revolve in steady orbit like the interlocking gears of a vast machine. The deliberately constrained pitch material serves as a backdrop that throws the dramatic shifts in rhythm, articulation, and dynamics into sharper relief. Upon this foundation, diverse musical variables, such as textural transformations, rhythmic intricacies, and gradual accelerations and decelerations, are layered one upon another. The subtle sonic friction generated by the mechanical repetition of the cycle amplifies, with each surge in tempo, into a massive tension. The mass of sound that expands with explosive force at peak velocity and percussive density reaches its climax, then collapses abruptly, retreating back into stillness. Yet even in the final moments, when the surface energy has subsided and every sound has dissolved, the underlying cycle of seven pitches continues to turn.
